About NEFI
Northeast Film Intelligence is an independent cinema knowledge and community platform serving the eight states of Northeast India.
The core problem
Northeast Indian cinema suffers from a knowledge gap. Information is scattered across newspapers, personal profiles, old blogs, academic papers, festival catalogues, government reports, interviews and personal memories.
Students cannot find resources. Researchers start from scratch. Journalists lack reference material. Filmmakers struggle to discover opportunities. Important cultural history disappears.
There is currently no single institution that systematically collects, organizes, publishes and distributes knowledge about the cinema ecosystems of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Sikkim.— NEFI Institutional Brief
Mission
To document, preserve, research and connect the cinema cultures of Northeast India while making film knowledge accessible to everyone.
Vision
To become the leading cinema knowledge institution of Northeast India. We want to be the first place people visit when they want to learn about Assamese, Manipuri, Bodo, Khasi, Mizo, Naga, Tripuri, Arunachali and Sikkimese cinema.
What NEFI is and what it is not
NEFI is
A research institution, a digital archive, a magazine, a resource hub, a community platform and a public knowledge project that makes information accessible.
NEFI is not
A gossip website, a promotional portal, a film production company, a festival, or a review farm. Reviews are only one component.
Primary audience
The strongest version of NEFI is not a website. It is an institution. A student writing a thesis on Assamese cinema should find NEFI. A journalist researching Manipuri cinema should cite NEFI. A filmmaker looking for grants should use NEFI. A future generation trying to understand the cinema history of the region should not have to start from zero because NEFI preserved, organized and shared that knowledge.— NEFI Institutional Brief, Version 1.0
